Chicken Disease Summary: Classification and Prevention

Farmers should closely observe and listen to the behavior of their flocks, then adjust their care methods accordingly, as the physical condition of each chicken and each growth stage is different.

    Respiratory diseases group

    Disease name Reason Symptom How to room
    Newcastle disease (avian distemper) Virus Paramyxo

    High fever, labored breathing, paralysis, twisted neck, and green diarrhea.

    Keep the coop clean and regularly sprinkle lime powder.
    Crush garlic (5g per liter) and mix it with water; crush perilla leaves and ginger and mix them into the feed twice a week, along with perilla and Eclipta prostrata (false daisy) leaves.
    When chickens get sick: feed each chicken 10 earthworms per day and give them concentrated Eclipta leaf juice to drink 5 times a day.

    Avian influenza (H5N1, H5N6)

    Influenza A virus

    High fever, purple comb, and sudden death. Keep the coop well-ventilated and disinfect with green tea leaf water or lime water; avoid contact with other flocks.
    Let the chickens forage for earthworms in the garden and provide Eclipta prostrata (false daisy) leaves.
    When chickens get sick: feed each chicken 10 earthworms per day and give them concentrated Eclipta leaf juice to drink 5 times a day.

    Infectious bronchitis (IB)

    Coronavirus Coughing, nasal discharge, reduced egg production, and thin eggshells. Keep the coop warm during cold weather and supplement with ginger and lemongrass.
    Give ginger water in the morning (not in the evening) and warm lemongrass water for 3–5 days, combined with Coleus amboinicus (oregano), perilla leaves, Piper sarmentosum (wild betel leaves), chives, and fish mint (Houttuynia cordata).
    When chickens get sick:
    Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) Herpesvirus  Coughing up blood and wheezing. Keep the coop clean, reduce dust, and supplement with garlic and ginger.
    Give the chickens water mixed with crushed garlic, ginger, and Coleus amboinicus (oregano) leaves.
    When chickens get sick:
    CRD (chicken asthma) Mycoplasma gallisepticum Wheezing, nasal discharge, and reduced appetite. Keep the coop well-ventilated and regularly give crushed garlic and ginger in drinking water.
    Provide water mixed with crushed garlic, ginger, and Coleus amboinicus (oregano) leaves.
    When chickens get sick:
    ORT (Ornithobacterium Respiratory Disease) Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale  Difficulty breathing, swollen face, and nasal discharge. Keep the coop well-ventilated and clean.
    Crush garlic and ginger, mix with warm water, and give it to the chickens to drink.
    When chickens get sick:

    Digestive – Liver – Intestinal Disease Group

    Hepatitis virus

    Give drinking water infused with fish mint, Solanum procumbens (Chinese violet), Eclipta prostrata (false daisy), Phyllanthus amarus (stonebreaker), chrysanthemum flowers, and plantain leaves for 3–5 days.
    When chickens get sick:
    E.coli E.coli bacteria Diarrhea, foul-smelling feces, and dehydration. Clean feeding and drinking containers regularly, and supplement with Paederia foetida (fish vine) or guava leaves twice a week.
    When chickens get sick: give them thickly boiled mangosteen rind water, 1 spoon, 3 times a day.
    Necrotic Enteritis (NE) Clostridium perfringens 

    Diarrhea, extremely foul-smelling feces, and sudden death.

    Clean the coop floor and avoid moldy feed.
    Give drinking water made from guava leaves and Paederia foetida (fish vine) for 3–5 days.
    When chickens get sick: give them thickly boiled mangosteen rind water, 1 spoon, 3 times a day.
    Coccidiosis Intestinal parasites Bloody diarrhea and lethargy. Keep the coop floor dry and regularly supplement with Paederia foetida (fish vine) or guava leaves.
    Crush mugwort leaves, fish vine, and guava leaves, and give the extracted juice to drink for 3–5 days.
    When chickens get sick: give them thickly boiled mangosteen rind water, 1 spoon, 3 times a day.

    Blackhead disease (Histomoniasis)

    Histomonas parasite Darkened comb, weak chickens, and yellow, foamy droppings. Maintain cleanliness and eliminate intermediate host worms.
    Crush betel leaves and mix with water for the chickens to drink.

    Tremors, loss of balance, and death in chicks.

    When chickens get sick: feed them cooked beef liver mixed with fish oil to enhance absorption, 3 times per week, and let them sunbathe in the morning and afternoon.
    Calcium – Phosphorus deficiency Diet lacking minerals

    Thin eggshells and soft bones.

    Add bone meal, shells
    Mix bone meal + spinach to feed
    When chickens are sick: Feed them crushed shells.
    1 time/ 1 week
